Santos

May 3 - May 29, 2024

Opening May 3, 4 -7p

Gospel Flat Show Space is pleased to present Santos, an exhibition of photographs by Johanna Case-Hofmeister. Santos, made in Baja’s volcanic landscape searches for a still point in cavities, necro-transformations, and patterns which defy our narratives with nature. The photographs in color and black-and-white exhibited with drone and boat footage balance tension with stillness and movement.

In Santos, a crash-test L1011 basks beside the Mexicali highway slowly scavenged over six months. On a remote ridge, whale skeletons assembled by a long dead fisherman, appear ready for flight, taxiing overland. Las Islas Encantadas breach and dive. The Island of Death, The Saint, and The Orphan appear to zoom larger the longer the distance. These islands are the whales’ landscape. Their images shift positions on the sea, conflicting with physical logic. A trawler levitates into the night sky, denying the constraints of time. Stars streak the sea, evoking an immersed net. The eye confronts a paradoxical landscape: movement in stillness in Santos.

Johanna Case-Hofmeister lives and works in Lamy, New Mexico. She received her MFA in photography from Yale University. Her work has been shown at the Aperture Foundation, Jenkins Johnson Gallery, and the Bolinas Museum. She is an Assistant Professor in Arts & Humanities at Northern New Mexico College.
